SANDALWOOD (SANTALUM ALBUM)

Effects: Balancing.

Aroma: Base note.

This evergreen tree comes from Australia and the East Indies. In India the Sandalwood tree is widely considered to be sacred.

Properties: 

  • Antiseptic.
  • Antidepressant. 
  • Antispasmodic.
  • Anti-inflammatory.
  • Diuretic.
  • Calming. 
  • Astringent.

Contra-indications:
Do not use for depressed people as it may lower their mood even more.

Extraction:
Steam distillation of the wood.

Uses:

  • Bronchitis. 
  • Urinary infections.
  • Fatigue.

In powdered form, Sandalwood is burned during religious ceremonies.

It helps nervous tension and anxiety either as a blended massage oil or in a vaporiser or burner.

Added to a bath or massaged on the lower back as a blended oil it may help alleviate cystitis.

Sandalwood helps to improve the immune system.

Massaged into the chest or throat as a blend it helps sore throats and bronchitis.

Sandalwood is widely used in beauty preparations and has a beneficial effect on eczema, acne and dry and chapped skin.
